This guide explains how to transfer country code top-level domain names (.fr, .re, .tf, .pm, .yt, .wf .eu, .be) to OVH.

To transfer a country code top-level domain names (.fr, .re, .tf, .pm, .yt, .wf .eu, .be) to OVH, make sure that it meets the following critera:

  • Your domain name must not be in redemption period or pending delete status. *
  • You should not have renewed your domain fewer than 46 days ago. (Recommendation)
  • The contacts in the Whois database must have been informed of the transfer request. *
  • The domain must not be blocked. *
  • The domain should not be due to expire in under 61 days.

You must also have unblocked the domain and got the transfer code (do this with your current registrar).

To find out who your current registrar is, do a Whois search for your domain name.

A transfer code may be known under a number of different names:
AuthCode, AuthInfo, EPP code, Transfer code...

Transfer code

Step 1: Unlock domain name and get transfer code

In order to transfer your domain name to OVH, first of all you have to unlock it and get the AUTH/INFO code, for .fr, .re names and similar.

The AUTH/INFO code is a key that the registrar needs in order to validate your domain name. You can check the status of your domain name using the Whois tool. See the start of this guide for the necessary transfer criteria.

In order to unlock your domain name, you should contact your old registrar.

When a domain is unlocked, it automatically locks again in seven days. The timing is the same for all extensions.

Hold on to your transfer code, you will need it when you order

Step 2: Order at OVH

Now we will go through the key steps for ordering a transfer of a country code top-level domain names (.fr, .re, .tf, .pm, .yt, .wf .eu, .be).
Search for domain
  • Go to the OVH website. Search for your name in the search bar, then click "Order/Transfer".
Check domain name
  • At this stage a more complete check is carried out.
You have to confirm that you are the domain name owner.

In fact you can request to transfer a domain name without being the owner; however if the legitimate owner refuses the request, the domain name will not be transferred.

Select "Continue" to confirm.
This type of transfer does not change the domain name owner.
To do this you have to request the change. See this guide: How to change the owner of a country code top-level domain (.fr .re .tf .pm .yt .wf .eu .be)
Choice of options
  • You now have to choose between classic DNS servers or Anycast DNS servers.
You also have to choose the type of solution for your domain name.
Enter transfer code
  • To transfer your domain to OVH, you must get the (AUTHINFO) transfer code from your current provider.
Then you can enter it in the purchase order.

If you choose to enter it at a later date you have to go to your control panel. On the homepage in the "Domains" -> "Ongoing operations" section.

Select "Continue" once you have made your choice.
Choice of hosting package
  • You have to choose whether or not you want a hosting package with your domain.
Once you have chosen, go to the next stage.
Preview of your order
  • You will see an order summary. Click "Continue" to go to the next step.
  • Identify yourself or create a new account in order to continue.
Preview of contacts
  • On this page, you have to choose the contacts to set up once the transfer is complete.
Confirmation of domain name owner
  • At this stage, you have to confirm that you own the domain name in question.
Select "Continue" after confirming the request.
AFNIC ID details
  • When a request is made for a domain with a ".fr .re .tf .pm .yt .wf" extension, AFNIC ID is requested.

This may be different depending on the purpose of the extension, or the legal status of the owner.
Complete the details and then click "Continue".
Choice of DNS servers (as long as you haven't chosen Anycast DNS)
You must choose your DNS servers:

  • OVH servers: You have previously configured your OVH DNS zones or enables your hosting package and your emails.
  • Keep current DNS servers: You have to check that the current provider will continue to provide the services associated with your domain once you have transferred it.
  • Customise your servers yourself: You enter the DNS servers of your choice and you ensure that they are correctly configured.
Confirm Terms and Conditions.
  • In order to generate a purchase order, you must accept the Terms and Conditions.
For your information:

  • If you order a domain name transfer and a web hosting package, the hosting package is usually installed before the domain name is transferred.

  • If you do not settle the purchase order, the transfer will not begin.

Transfer steps

.fr .re .tf .pm .yt .wf

You want to transfer a domain name to OVH from another registrar, without changing the owner.

This means that the owner contact at the current registrar and one that will entered at OVH are the same (same name and surname in the case of an individual, same company name for a legal entity).

Here we are talking about a simple transfer.

You need a transfer code for this type of transfer (sometimes it is called an EPP code, AUTH code). You get the code from the domain name registrar.

Once the code provided to OVH is verified, the .fr, .re, .tf, .pm, .yt, .wf .eu registry (AFNIC) sends the outgoing registrar, the one you are leaving, notice of the change, who chooses to agree to or oppose the change.

All of the above conditions and rules are imposed by AFNIC, the registrar for .fr, .re, .tf, .pm, .yt, and .wf extensions.

Three options then present themselves:

  • The request is automatically accepted: the domain name is transferred within a few minutes.

  • There is no response from the outgoing registrar: the domain name is automatically transferred to the incoming registrar after 8 days.

However you can contact the outgoing registrar to speed up the transfer process. The registrar will validate the email that they have not yet processed provided that documents proving that you are the domain name owner are provided (conditions specific to the outgoing registrar).

  • The request is refused: the domain name is transferred after 22 days, this gives the three parties (the domain name owner, the old registrar and the new registrar) time to analyse and understand the reason behind the transfer refusal.

Please note that the registrar cannot stop a domain name being transferred. They can temporarily block the request (for various reasons: non-payment, trademark issues, etc.) but it will be transferred once 22 days have passed, as stated above.

AFNIC's role is to rule on the legitimacy of the block caused by the registrar.
  • The transfer cannot be blocked by the outgoing registrar for .fr, .re, .tf, .pm, .yt, .wf domain names.

  • Without payment, the transfer will not be initiated.

.eu .be

The transfer is only started if payment for the order has been received.

The domain must be unlocked, which is done automatically at some registrars.

Once the transfer is started, an email containing the transfer authorisation code will be sent to the current owner's email address. You can get the transfer code directly from the registrars website.

For .eu domains: go to the EURID website.

For .be domains: go to the website.

The administrative contact should then confirm the transfer code in order to complete the process.

If the code is not entered the transfer cannot be completed.

Once the code has been verified, the transfer is completed very quickly. Usually within a few hours.
  • Without transfer code verification, the transfer cannot happen.

  • The transfer will not begin until the order has been paid.
