IPv4 is the historical address protocol used for all devices connected to the Internet. The proliferation of devices slowly reduced the number of IPv4 addresses available. This led to the creation of IPv6. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses, versus the 32-bit addresses used by IPv4. IPv6 allows quadrillions of devices to connect to the Internet.

The Internet is evolving, and we now need more and more addresses and better security to improve connectivity, and let smart, communicative objects to connect to the network.
