General questions

What is a VPS, and what is it used for?

A VPS is a Virtual Private Server for hosting websites (e-commerce, content, media, etc.) and/or software applications, particularly web based ones (portals, extranet, collaborative solutions, wiki, CRM software, etc.). Unlike shared hosting, this data is isolated on a single virtual machine, with resources solely dedicated to its user.

The VPS is a perfect compromise between web hosting plans and physical servers, combining reliability with the high performance of a dedicated environment. It provides you with more control than a web hosting plan, but without the difficulty of managing a server's physical hardware.

Who can use a VPS?

To manage a VPS, you need basic knowledge of server administration. You will need this to administer the operating system you install (Linux or Windows), and configure your applications.

If you need a VPS but don't think you have the technical skills required to manage it, we would recommend getting in touch with one of our partners.

What are web hosting control panels like Plesk or cPanel used for?

Plesk and cPanel are server configuration panels for configuring your web server.

They provide you with an interface that simplifies the way you manage multiple websites and services associated with a server, with no technical knowledge required. These applications also automate administration processes.

When customers order an OVH VPS, we offer licences for these control panels. We also offer 10-domain Plesk licences in our Cloud VPS range.

How do I choose between a VPS and a web hosting plan?

If you've used a web hosting plan before, then using a VPS is the next logical step up.

It provides you with even more options, including root access, access to Apache and PHP.ini (modification of PHP variables), and much more. You can also install an SSL certificate, and all software program types. In short, you get more freedom in terms of administering and configuring your server, without the hassle of managing any physical hardware.

Please note that by opting for a VPS, you will need to choose a configuration that best suits your application's requirements, and adapt your configuration to fit your growing needs.

How to choose the best VPS?

What are the advantages of a VPS, compared to a dedicated server?

Servers VPS are adapted to host most types of online content, for moderately sized projects.

We would recommend using a dedicated server if you want to have full control over your hardware, build solutions with more complex architectures, create an infrastructure that includes a private network, or deploy complex non-web solutions.

If you're developing fast-growing web projects and need more complex, flexible infrastructures, we would recommend opting for a Cloud VPS. You can then switch to either dedicated servers, or OVH Public Cloud solutions.

How long does it take to activate a VPS?

Once you've confirmed your payment, you'll need to wait a few minutes before your VPS becomes available.
You may need to wait longer if the payment details provided for your order need to be manually validated, as part of our anti-fraud policy.

Will I get a domain name or email service included with my VPS?

No, but you can add these solutions through your OVH Control Panel.

Which operating systems are compatible with a VPS?

All of our operating systems are listed on our website. This list will be updated in real time.

What are the differences between VPS and Public Cloud solutions?

With a VPS, you get a server with the most affordable price tag. This solution is adapted to suit non-critical applications that aren't resource intensive, since the physical server's resources are shared with other VPSs.

If you need guaranteed resources or are looking to build an infrastructure with multiple servers, then our Public Cloud solutions might be better suited to your needs. The OVH private network (vRack) is also offered with this service, unlike the VPS.

How do I choose between a VPS and Plesk web hosting?

For Plesk web hosting plans, you are provided with a server that has Plesk preinstalled. You can then use it to manage your websites, but you are not the administrator of this service, meaning you have a limited amount of control.
With a VPS, you get a virtual server that you can use at your own discretion. You are the administrator, and you can use it for whatever you want.

How do I log in to my VPS?

Depending on the operating system you're using (Linux or Windows), there are a number of ways you can log in to your VPS.

How do I migrate my content from a web hosting plan to a VPS?

You are responsible for migrating your data, and for pointing your domain names to your VPS, if required.

Which operating system is installed on my VPS?

When you order a VPS, you can choose which operating system you would like to install onto it: Linux or Windows. You can also choose whether or not you would like to have a web hosting control panel (e.g. Plesk), or a CMS (e.g. WordPress).

If you change your mind later on, you can reinstall the VPS from your OVH Control Panel. However, please note that when you reinstall a VPS, all of the data stored on it is permanently erased.

How do I configure my VPS?

This depends completely on the operating system you have chosen, and on the configurations you want to apply.

For common actions: via remote desktop (Windows), in SSH command lines via Linux, with a web hosting control panel (Plesk, cPanel), via the solutions deployed on the server (e.g. a CMS).

For significant changes (e.g. upgrading your VPS, configuring passwords, rights, or adding options): via the OVH RESTful API, or via your Control Panel.

Can I host several websites on a VPS?

Yes, you can host multiple websites on your VPS using virtual host. You will need to create several directories, then allocate a directory to each website.

To simplify this, we would highly recommend installing a multisite control panel. If you choose a Cloud VPS, you will also get a free Plesk Panel licence, for hosting up to 10 websites on your virtual server.

Is my VPS backed up?

OVH may be required to replicate your data as part of our internal operations, such as maintenance. However, this is not a guarantee against the loss of your data. You are responsible for creating your own backups.

To do this, you can use the following backup options: Snapshot (SSD VPS and Cloud VPS) or Automated backup (Cloud VPS).

Will I get technical support for my software with a VPS?

OVH provides you with a virtual server that you can use to host your data, websites and applications. We do not have the ability or the rights to access your data, or your configuration.

Because of this, we are unable to assist you with software configurations for your VPS.

What kinds of assistance can the OVH support team offer for using my VPS?

Our support team can be contacted by phone or by email (sent via your Control Panel). They can intervene if there are hardware issues, and to a limited extent, they can help you configure options for your VPS. However, our support team cannot help you with software configurations on your VPS.

I have just installed a VPS. Why are some services disabled in my Control Panel?

This situation is normal, as some operating systems don't preinstall all of the available services (SMTP, HTTP, DNS, etc.). You will need to install and launch these services when you require them.

Is the bandwidth allocated to my VPS guaranteed?

The bandwidth listed on our solution page is guaranteed. This will be the minimum bandwidth allocated to your services.

Is the VPS compatible with vRack?

Our VPS ranges are not compatible with vRack. If you would like to use this service, our Public Cloud instances might be more suitable for you.

How do I change the root password for my VPS?

Is WinPE mode available on the 2016 VPS range?

This option is not currently available for our VPS solutions.

Which PHP/MySQL versions are installed on operating systems with a CMS?

The PHP/My SQL versions installed are always the latest versions offered by CMS publishers. Generally, there is a gap of a few days between their official release and the point at which they're made available to all of our customers.

However, our teams are sometimes able to offer customers the opportunity to test new versions before they have been released.

What is OVH rescue mode used for?

If you're experiencing serious issues and have found an anomaly that needs to be corrected on your system disk, you can still perform interventions on your Cloud VPS.

In OVH rescue mode, you can reboot your service using a basic, temporary operating system that is not located on your local disk. You can then launch all of the repairs you need to carry out, and reboot your server normally.

What is KVM access?

In this mode, you can access your VPS using a secure connection, through your Control Panel. This solution is perfect if you are having difficulties reaching or managing your server.

How do I enable an SSL certificate?

Once you have ordered an SSL certificate for your VPS, you can enable it by modifying your web service's configuration. You can also get this certificate via our SSL Gateway.

How do I order an SSL certificate?

With our SSL Gateway, we supply Let’s Encrypt DV SSL certificates (by default) and Comodo EV SSL certificates (available as an option with the Advanced solution).

It's a simple, secure solution, SSL Gateway and it only takes a few minutes to deploy. We take care of the configuration, and renew your certificate automatically, so that it's always valid.

How do I change the operating system installed on my VPS?

You can change the operating system on your VPS at any time, using the OVH API or your Control Panel. This feature is free.
If you're using a Cloud VPS, you can also choose to reinstall Windows, or switch from Linux to Windows (as an option).

Important: please ensure that you've backed up your data before you launch a reinstallation.

How do I configure my VPS's DNS?

To list a domain's DNSs, go to your Control Panel.

You can configure DNS zones in the command lines, if you're using Linux. You can also do it via a graphic interface, if required.

Anti-DDoS protection

What is OVH Anti-DDoS, and what is it used for?

OVH Anti-DDoS is our protection system against Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks. These attacks aim to compromise servers by flooding them with unwanted traffic from infected machines (a botnet). The victim's server is then overwhelmed with several thousand connection requests per second, rendering it unavailable.

Denial-of-service attacks are becoming increasingly common. Each day, we block more than 2,000 attacks on our network.

Please note that OVH Anti-DDoS is not optional: it's included with all of our servers.

How does OVH Anti-DDoS work?

It's based on a mitigation system, which analyses connections on our network. As soon as it notices an irregularity (e.g. too many concurrent connections from the same servers), it blocks illegitimate traffic, so that it doesn't affect our services.

Backups and storage

How do I use the Automated backup service offered with Cloud VPS solutions?

You can use it to schedule backups of your Cloud VPS (excluding additional disks). These backups are performed daily, over a rolling 14-day period.

Your backups are exported on to our infrastructure, and triple-replicated. You can use them at any time to restore your Cloud VPS.

How do I use the Multiprotocol backup option offered with Cloud VPS?

It's a distinct storage space, which is separate from your Cloud VPS. You can use it to copy data (generally backups from your virtual server).
The Multiprotocol backup solution works similarly to a USB drive, which you plug in to your computer and save a copy of your data onto. You are responsible for configuring an automatic or manual system that backs up your data.
You can choose to access this service via the FTP, NFS or CIFS protocols.

How do I use the Snapshot backup service?

Snapshots are photographs of your VPS, taken at specific moments. They are comparable to restore point.

You can create a snapshot from your Control Panel, save it, then use it to restore your VPS. Your VPS will then be restored back to the state it was in when the snapshot was created.

Please note that when you use a snapshot to restore your VPS, the one previously taken is deleted. For more information, please refer to our guide via this page.

What are the differences between Snapshot backup and Automated backup?

The Automated backup option performs daily backups of your Cloud VPS, replicated three times. You will always have 14 different backups, corresponding to the most recent 14 days in which you have accessed your VPS.
A snapshot requires manual, punctual action from you. Also, if it's used to restore your VPS, it will be deleted once the process is complete.

Can I import and export snapshots?

This feature is not currently available. However, if we see that there is enough customer demand for this feature, we will plan to develop and add it at a later stage.

What can I do if I need more disk space?

You have two options:
  • Switch your VPS to a model with more disk space, if possible in the range you have chosen.
  • Add an additional disk, between 50 GB and 500 GB.

Can I increase the volume of an additional disk?

Not strictly speaking, as an additional disk has a predefined size. To get more disk space, you will need to delete the additional disk, and order a new one.
Important: the data stored on the additional disk will be erased when you delete it. As a result, you will need to perform a full backup before you delete it, then restore your backup onto the new additional disk.

IP

What are additional IPs used for?

Our VPSs are delivered with IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. However, you can add up to 16 additional IPv4 addresses.

These geolocated addresses will improve your SEO ranking. You can also use them to redirect incoming traffic for your VPS to another OVH server, e.g. as part of a disaster recovery plan (DRP).

How does geolocation work?

IP addresses are identified on the internet as being a specific nationality. This is important, especially for search engines. When web users use search engines, the top results displayed will be websites with IP addresses based in the same country as the person performing the search.

Want your website's SEO ranking to be just as high in France as it is in the UK? Simply add an additional geolocated IP in France, and point it to your website.

Which countries can I get geolocated IPs for?

When you order an additional IP address, you can choose from 13 countries: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, Poland, Portugal, Ireland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Finland, Lithuania and Belgium.

How much does an additional IP cost?

It costs from $3 to set up the IP (allocating it, and routing it on our network). Afterwards, this IP address is free, and will be renewed monthly at no additional cost.

I've just ordered an additional IP. What do I do next?

We ensure that your additional IPs are routed to your VPS. However, you'll need to configure them, so your operating system (Linux or Windows) can make them function.

Upgrading

Can I upgrade my VPS?

You can increase your VPS's power at any time, directly from your Control Panel or via our API.

Important: you can only do this within the same range (e.g. Cloud VPS to another Cloud VPS), and to a higher volume server. If you wish to migrate your data any other way, you will need to order a new VPS and configure it manually.

Can I migrate my content from one VPS to another?

When you upgrade your VPS, your content is migrated automatically — you won't need to do anything. We will also ensure that your service remains online.
If you have a Cloud VPS, you can also choose between increasing your partition size, or creating an additional partition. All of the details will be provided to you in an email sent after the update.

Can I migrate my Cloud VPS to a Cloud RAM VPS, and vice versa?

No, you can only migrate to other solutions within the same range.

Can I turn my VPS into a Public Cloud instance?

No, it is not currently possible to turn your VPS into a Public Cloud instance.

What will happen when I upgrade my VPS?

Your entire system (OS, software, configuration settings) is saved, and you just have to create the disk partition. The operation is carried out automatically in just a few minutes, and is completely transparent for your end users.
Regarding your billing, you will pay a one-off upgrade fee, and any remaining balance you have will be put towards your new VPS.

Can I move my VPS from one datacentre to another (e.g. from a UK datacentre to a Polish one)?

This feature is currently unavailable. A VPS cannot be migrated or copied to another datacentre.

However, you can order a VPS in a different location, and transfer your data manually. Please note that if you do this, your new server will have different IP addresses.

Can I increase the disk space on my VPS?

Yes, you can add empty disks to your VPS. However, the OS you have installed (Linux or Windows) must be configured to take into account this upgrade.

API

What is the VPS API used for?

Our OVH RESTful API can be used with your Control Panel. You can use it to perform actions such as rebooting your server, reinstalling an OS, changing your service's contracts, signing up for additional options, upgrading your resources, and much more. You can also write scripts based on this API.

Prices and billing

How much is a VPS?

This will depend on the level of power you have chosen, and how critical the environment that you are hosting is. We offer prices from $4.49 to $46.07/month. After you have ordered, you can also scale your service if your requirements increase.

Concerning Windows VPSs, prices range between $17.99 and $86.01/month and include the Microsoft licence.

What is the Control Panel used for?

In this interface, you can manage the billing for your services, configure your options, contact our support team, and much more.
Please note that you cannot use your VPS itself through your Control Panel. To do this, you will need to log in directly (via SSH, remote desktop or KVM).

Terms & conditions

How many VPSs are installed on each OVH physical server?

We take great care to ensure that all of our VPSs remain available and online, in accordance with our promise to provide guaranteed resources. Depending on the capacity and sizes of the solutions they host, our host servers are designed to host several hundred VPSs.

Can I host adult content on my VPS?

You can host any kind of content, provided that it is compliant with local laws in the country that your VPS is hosted in. Please research the local laws carefully, as you are responsible for the data hosted on your server.

Can I share a VPS?

Several people can use the same VPS. We advise that you take great caution when doing so, as you are responsible for how your service is used.

What is an SLA?

A Service Level Agreement (SLA) is our guarantee that your service always remains available (excluding scheduled maintenance operations).

Our VPS ranges have rock-solid stability, and high availability. When you rent one of our VPSs, we guarantee that it will remain online, and we have figures to support this. In the event of us being unable to fulfil our obligations, we will refund you 5% of your monthly bill per hour that your services are down, capped at 100% of the monthly bill for the service concerned.

What are the authorised usages for my VPS? Can it be cut off, if I use more resources than I have?

You are free to use your VPS as you wish, and install any kind of software onto it, provided that it's compliant with both local laws and our Terms & Conditions.

You have your own resource quotas (CPU, RAM, hard disk). However, in accordance with our Terms & Conditions, we're able to put your VPS in quarantine if you exceed your quotas in a way that risks affecting the stability of our infrastructures. For example, continuous intensive CPU usage could trigger this procedure.

Where are my backups and replications located?

Your backups and replications are located as close as possible to your VPS, in the same country.

There is one exception to this rule: VPSs hosted in Poland, for which backups and replications are located in France.

Confidentiality

Does OVH create backups of my data?

We never access our customers' data and therefore we never perform any backup operations. In order to do so, you must use one of our dedicated features (automated backup, backup through Snapshot, etc.) or make these copies with your own means.

We cannot be held accountable if you haven't backed up your data.

Where are the VPS servers located? Where is my data being hosted?
